This little lady is turning 3 today. To mark the milestone of this delightful age, she threw the biggest fit of her life yesterday. Here was the plan, the whole family was at Target (looking at closet organization stuff, whohoo) and Dave was going to stay longer with Elliana so they could pick out Mallory's birthday present. I was going to take Mallory home to get her a nap. When the almost-3 year old realized her sister was going to get to stay at Target, she arched her back and literally laid down on the pavement in the parking lot, kicking and screaming. Using all my strength, I manage to get her in her carseat by throwing my shoulder into her chest, all the while, speaking in a gentle tone to try to get her to calm down. Hey, I wouldn't want to have to leave Target early either! When the screaming turned to quiet sobs, I thought we were good to go. As soon as we crossed the highway, she unbuckled her seatbelt, stood up in the van and bum-rushed the front seat and started smacking me, all the while trying to open the van door in a moving vehicle.
That's when the calm tone turned to absolute panic, because I thought for some reason she actually had the ability to open the door while the van was moving. I screech over to the McDonalds parking lot, where I called Dave to come deal with the situation. It was one of those crazy moments as a parent, where you are so thankful your kid didn't get hurt, and so incredibly mad at them at the same time.
So, today is her birthday party. I had contemplated canceling the whole thing, but thought that wasn't an appropriate punishment for a 3 year old. We made amends and today we will eat cake. Happy Birthday Mallory.

:) Birthday Mallory....and keep the faith for a great party, Ceci.
Thank goodness for child locks! :)...now if they only made them for car seats !?!?!?
Yeah, everybody says "terrible twos"...my daughter carried over to 3...and now she's 10! Still strong willed, but in some ways I admire that NO ONE will ever walk all over her.
Thanks for being willing to share the good, the bad and the ugly. It gives hope to others (like me) whose kids decide to pull the antics in public. We all seem to have those little masks we put on when we walk out our doors...."everything's fine, REALLY" yeah right. Thank goodness for friends and family who know better!
There have actually been times when I've gotten after my kids in public and worried who else saw me. Why am I worried more about what others think than loving my kids through the tough times? Hmmmm.
Have a great day.
Karen

omg
LOL LOL (only because it is not me this time!) Oh I have so been there. It's ok. Mallory is not an awful child and you are not an awful mother :).
It gets better, it really does....
i echo Melissa's comment...oh my gosh!
Ahhhhh......the moments we can all relate to in one way or another!! Sorry to say there will be more BUT there are far far more of the moments you do not know how you could ever be more proud and excited about the life that God gave YOU to parent. What an honor huh? I thank Him everyday for the privilage of caring for His children.....even when they storm out of the house like everyone in the world is against them on the way to the bus. Yeah...it was a wild morning....and that was from my newly 14 year old son! What a trip....I just had to take a deep breath and pray for him as I know in those moments they are more vunerable to the attacks of the enemy. Anyway...back on track now....it sounds like you handled this situation very well. It is one that could have gone very badly very quickly (anyone remember the whole car wash incident where the mom took her 3 or 4 year old out and sprayed her with the hose to get her out of her temper tantrum?) See....you ended it with no police and no straight jacket so it was all good right??!! Be blessed today ladies....I know the 1st thing I am doing today is hugging my kids when they bust thru the door today.....teenagers or not...they are the most amazing gifts and really open my eyes to how I manage myself!!
Going to post any pic of Mallory's Birthday Party :)
