Polite Night?

I found a good article in this months issue of Redbook Magazine. It was talking about dinnertime, and how research shows that kids who dine with their parents grow up healthier and happier--but it's harder than ever to fit family dinners in. So, some real moms shared their tried-and-true recipes for bringing the family together around the dinner table. My favorite suggestions were to make the meal a special occasion by having a POLITE NIGHT. This family sets up the dining room table with nice linens, cloth napkins, and candles if they're feeling ambitious. Then they all practice their best manners--no elbows on the table, no inturrupting each other, putting the napkin in lap.

Another idea was to have "JUST BECAUSE" celebrations. This family celebrates random things, like the first day of fall or the dogs birthday. The kids get involved by making decorations. Dinner is fancy hors d'oeuvres and they make fancy drinks and turn up the music.

Do you have any fun ideas for ways to make dinnertime fun or special?

When my kids were little back when dinosaurs roamed the earth I had a little ceramic pig sitting by my plate at the table. If someone chewed with their mouth full I would just state the fact they did and pass them the pig. Then if they saw someone not using good table manners they could do the same thing.... at the end of the meal whoever had the pig had to help me with the dishes! It was a fun way to teach table manners!
