Lame!

It's Elliana's fifth birthday today and this morning I'm working on making a treat for her class. Last year, we made awesome Dora rice crispy treats. Click here to check out those photos. This year, I wanted to try something new.

This is the cookbook from which I remembered my Mom making really cool "ice cream cone cupcakes", so we hunted it down for the recipe. In this cookbook (obviously from the 50's) it specifically states to fill cones 1/2 full for a nice rounded top. It said if you fill the cone too full, they wont have that nice rounded top, important so the cake looks like ice cream in the cone.

Well, in the other two recipes I found on these ice cream cone cupcakes, oddly enough on the back of both the cake batter box, AND the cone box, it states to fill the cones 2/3 full. Unfortunately, I followed the 50's recipe, and these turned out LAME! I guess I'm going to have to pile on the frosting to make em look like ice cream cones. I'm sure the Kindergardeners wont mind at all!

I think it was an awesome idea and they turned out GREAT. Most kids enjoy the effort more than anything.

I think they will be fine. Extra frosting never hurt :) Cute idea though.

you could always dig out a little cake, put frosting in and put the top back on with more frosting to help it keep it's shape...

We are not even allowed to bring homemade treats anymore, isn't that sad :(

First thing my daughter said to me on Friday morning wasn't "good morning" or "i love you", it was, "today is Elliana's birthday!" My daughter loved them for class! They were a hit.
Just to make you feel better...i made these last year for my son & filled them up 2/3rds of the way like the directions said. Unfortunatly, they didn't expand evenly & wouldn't stand! While a really great idea, not so practical, ha?

We had that cookbook when I was young. My mom made the cone ckaes for my brother and hers turned out fine. When I tried them for my kids - they turned out like yours.
