Dave told me that he was watching the Today show this morning and they had a child "expert" on talking about discipline. She recommended that you never spank a child for misbehaving, but if the child is really naughty you should TAKE THEIR FAVORITE STUFFED ANIMAL OR TOY AND SHRED IT TO PIECES RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM! I think this is the worlds worst advice. Just thinking about Elliana's "Fluffers" at the guillotine makes ME want to cry. This orange stinky giraffe has been her one companion since the day she was born,(thanks Marni) it sleeps with her every night, goes to Grandma's, and recently it got left at a friends and she could barely sleep without it. And I am supposed to shred it in front of her to make a point? I just talked to a friend of mine who remembers her Mom burning her blanket when she was a child. To this day, the memory of that event upsets her.
I'd like to shred that child experts Gucci bag in front of her for giving such bad advice and see how she feels!

I'm fine with spanking. I'm fine with time-outs. Never, NEVER, would I shred blankie or Gus. That is just mean!!
I'm a little concerned about the "experts" that the Today Show has been bringing on.
Yikes, that's a little disturbing! I had a teacher that I worked with when I was student teacher who believed that it was totally necessary to stand in front of the class and rip up papers that didn't have names on them -- for third grade. She harped on me to do it and made me do it in front of the class once and I'll never ever do it again. To shred your own kid's favorite toy or blanket would be a million times worse. Sad.
I'm glad Ellie likes the giraffe. I remember picking it out and falling in love with it myself. Long live Fluffers!
WoW! Wonder if this was done to this so called "expert"?? I am fine with spanking as well. It's not abuse, a firm swat on the butt will get the point across. Shredding a childs toy is just wrong!
My children's stuffed animals are referred to as their "kids". Mine pretend to put their animals in time out, feed them, put them down for naps.... If I were to shred them, they'd probably question their own safety. Most children are pretty attached to their stinky stuffed animals.
Wow, that "expert" is so far off base. Does she have kids? There is a reason the Bible talks directly about spanking. If it is done in love and not anger, is seperates what the child did from who they are. It is by far the most loving thing you could do when it is done with the right heart. I can't believe someone would advise a parent to do such a thing as shred a favorite toy (not to mention distroying property in front of the child is not teaching them anything about respect).
