second door, on the second floor, on the left

My favorite movie from childhood was the Parent Trap, starring adorable Hailey Mills. It’s a great movie about twins, separated at birth, one goes with Mom to Boston, one to live on a ranch in California with Dad, and they don’t know the other even exists until…they meet at the SAME SUMMER CAMP! Shenanigans ensue, and the two are exiled to the “Isolation Cabin” where more shenanigans ensue, and they quickly (okay, not-so-quickly) realize they have the same birthday! Which is really weird, since they look like carbon copies of each other, and even weirder that no one really notices this anomaly until the two eleven years olds figure out for themselves that they are TWINS!

The real shenanigans ensue when they SWITCH PLACES, and pretend to be the other. It takes a lot of information swapping so they don’t give the up the jig. For instance, the description of the location of one of the bedrooms, “it’s the second door, on the second floor, on the left.” After the big switcheroo the only people who are remotely suspect are the Grandfather from Boston, and the dog and housekeeper/ranch hand from California.

In the end, (I don’t want to give too much away if you haven’t seen it) The family is completely restored when the Mother and the Father switch the children back, the evil step-mother-to-be is put in her rightful place after some really crazy shenanigans on a camping trip; meant to single-handedly destroy said step-mother-to-be, and they live happily ever after. They just don’t make movies like that anymore.

Except they did a re-make of the movie in 1998, starring Lindsey Lohan, when she was still adorable, and not yet involved in “alleged” cocaine shenanigans. The movie was playing last night and I had a chance to watch it with my 4 year old. She loved it, especially the camp-related shenanigans, and I loved watching it with her. Every time I would quote a line from the movie, she’d look over at me and say, “how did you know that?”

I had one of those moments…watching that movie with my daughter, and remembering watching the original with my own Mom. It was a strange sensation, when you realize that life has come full circle.

You- you're twins. Do you share everything?

Everything.

Well give your sister her half of THIS!
