I am a "techno-idiot." Computers and use there-of do not come easily to me. When I was in college, there was this new thing called "e-mail" that everyone was talking about. If freaked me out. Professors were going to "e-mail" assignments to us, but I asked for them just to hand them to me in person. When I was a senior, I finally figured out how to access my email account, and a boy that I had liked as a freshmen had asked me out over email, 4 years previous. Had I not been such a techno-idiot, I may have a different last name!
Anyway, in radio you need to use a variety of computers for a variety of things. When I go into the studio, I press the same buttons, in the same order. It looks pretty fancy to be pressing all those knobs and sliding all the different buttons, but truthfully I have no idea what any of it means. I am forever calling the engineer out to JQ2, because something "sounds wierd", and he'll get here, tweak a few knobs and everything is fine!
Well, the engineer tweaked one too many knobs last Friday, and what voice work was sounding wierd, was now sounding HORRIBLE! Neither of us could figure out the editing program and we were about ready to punch each other, we were so frusterated! The engineer left, and I actually sat down and prayed for it to get worked out, I had so much to do!
My husband, who will occasionally pop in to say hi over the lunch hour, did that AND brought his friend with him who happened to have some sort of degree in Pro Tools, that editing software I was talking about! He sat down at my computer, made a quick phone call to his "Pro Tools" professor, and patiently explained explained what was going wrong. He showed me which knobs to tweak, and the I even understood about 25% of what he was saying.
I thought that was pretty cool. I'm still a techno-idiot, but God came through in my time of need and saved the day, in the form of a punk kid with a Pro Tools degree!
