A few blogs ago, I posted pictures of a hideously beautiful birthday cake. 20 year-old Jodi sweetly commented that someday she'd like a family like mine. Well, Jodi, let me tell you about Saturday! We had a very rare weekend where we didn't have anything on the calendar. Things kept trying to come up, but we diligently refused even the most tempting of plans. Dave got offered free tickets to the Tigers-Yankees game...But oh no, this was "Family Day!" Since the weather was perfect, we went to an apple orchard to frolic among the apple trees. We weren't the only ones with this plan, however, as all the young families in West Michigan happened upon this particular orchard, at the very same time.
We were hungry, and there were no McDonald's in sight. We put our name in at the cute little restaurant that served seasonal apple-flavored delicacies, and patiently waited our turn for a table. The place began to fill up, mostly with cranky members of a certain society which requires one to wear a red hat and loud purple clothing. My patience, and romantic notions of a family day were wearing thin.
We were finally seated, at a rickety old "antique" table, with my 16 month old in a rickety old "antique" high chair, and the 4 year old kicking the table non-stop. It was then that I totally checked out of "Family Day." I wanted nothing to do with the crowds, nothing to do with the noise, nothing to do with the cranky kids in a crowded restaurant. As I was staring into space, not participating in disciplining the kids for being ornery, or in any conversion whatsoever, Dave kindly reminded me that he gave up a day in Detroit FOR THIS!
I wanted to pack up the kids and go straight home, but Ellie kept whining about picking apples. Apparently, it was something she was quite looking forward to. The very busy and harried waitress asked if we needed anything else (they obviously needed the table) and Dave asked where we go to pick the apples. She looked right at him at said, "alright then, have a nice day." Even the waitress wasn't listening to him!
Sometimes, Family Days are just not what they're cracked up to be!

*hugs* sorry your family day didn't go as planned. Maybe next time.
My favorite is...well, it's gotta be a tie for my first Mother's day or "going out for dinner after church for a treat". First Mother's day: I also had this romantic notion of sitting in church weepy eyed while all the children sang a cute Mother's day song and I held my new baby as a first time mother proud as can be. Well, between getting spit up on- bad, that being the only shirt that fit my "post baby curves", baby screaming, and the nursing mother's room being full so nursing in the bathroom, I think I could faitly hear the children singing... LOL it is not as bad as it sounds, just reality sometimes. :) "Family days" can be a whole lot of work!! :)
"Family Days" never work out. It's those spontaneous times that you seem to remember.
It's Kind of like Dave and me driving to Kansas City on the 22nd to see KC play SanDiego at Arrowhead stadium. It just happened! It was spontaneous!
