We had a staff meeting last week and were all talking about the new Home Depot commercial...Have you seen it? It's a dad who is working under the sink fixing it or something, and his 5 or six year old comes up and asks if he can help. The Dad immediately brushes him off, and the kid, dejected, starts walking away. Dad realizes what he's done and asks the boy if he wants to hold the flashlight. Next frame...Dad and son under the sink, boy with the flashlight and Dad explaining the different parts of the plumbing.
At the staff meeting we were all talking about the ad, and how true to life it is. How many times have I brushed off my 3 year old because she always wants to help me make the toast, which makes a big mess, and it's so much easier to just do it myself. I could give a million examples, we all could...But the ad has really made me think.
So last night, it was time for Ellie to go to bed, and she was pulling her usual stall tactics. "I need another glass of milk." "I need something to eat, I'm starving." "I need this, I need that." So I asked her if she wanted to stay up late and watch HGTV with me. She replied without missing a beat..."You mean, Design Star?" Which made me laugh, because I have no idea how she knew it was on at that time, or how she even knew the name of it, but I digress.
We cuddled up under the blanket and she kept pushing her forehead into mine and giggling, which made it pretty difficult to watch the show. She would do that every couple of minutes, and I couldn't figure it out. Then I realized what was going on. She was so excited about doing something with just me, something out of the ordinary, something special. I let her enjoy her moment, I missed most of what was going on with the show, due to her hyper antics, but so what? Ellie-Belly Bear doesn't know it, but she can thank a Home Depot Ad for getting to stay up late to "watch" that show!
